2013 Teen Camp Report

Teen Camp 1Each summer our Orange County Teen Ministry, along with other high school ministries from all over the Los Angeles area, travel to Big Bear for what we call “Teen Camp.” This year we took 43 students to camp from Orange County, with the total number of teens being approximately 400. We were also able to award 13 of those students with partial scholarships due to some donations from our members.

Some of the camps most exciting moments occurred during the intense competitions! All 400 students were split up into 6 “Tribes,” and tribes competed throughout the week in various competitions: Monster Ball, Lip Sync, Zombie Run, Glow-in-the-Dark Ultimate Frisbee, etc. There were points given out in each competition for sportsmanship and performance, and the Tribe of Daniel took away the trophy with the most points this year!

Apart from these competitions, students also were able to attend workshops on various subjects ranging from Family Drama, Studying the Bible, Hot Topics, and Leadership. This year’s camp also included two specialized tracks for specific campers: a Drop Zone track for our incoming 9th Grade campers, and a Senior Track for all incoming Senior students.

Teen Camp 2The theme of this year’s camp was “Speak Up.” The first lesson of camp discussed how God originally spoke up for us, creating us in his image. The second took that theme further and described how, due to our sin and disobedience, God needed to speak up again for our sake and sent his son to die as a sacrifice for us. These lessons helped the campers gain a better perspective of who God is and what He has done for us through Jesus. In small groups following those lessons, campers shared their thoughts and beliefs regarding God with each, and many openly confessed their sin in the safety of those small groups as well.

Teen Camp 3Later in the week, the students heard lessons on our need to speak up for God. We were taught the importance of allying ourselves with relationships that will take us closer to God, and to be willing to be vulnerable with others about how we’re really doing spiritually. The students were also challenged to “do work” as they went home from the mountain, making sure to put the lessons into practice and not letting the amazing camp experience go to waste!

Overall, our Teen Ministry has returned from camp fired up and ready to speak up for God as they transition back into their schools for the Fall Semester. We ask that you continue to pray for our Teen Ministry, and we thank all of those amazing staff and counselors who spent their week up at camp with our students! `

Dr. John Oakes Teaching on the Book of Daniel, August 4 and 11

Dr. John Oakes Teaching on the Book of Daniel, August 4 and 11

Dr John OakesThe Summer Bible Study series continues this Sunday, August 4, with a class taught by guest teacher Dr. John Oakes from the San Diego Church of Christ. Dr. Oakes is an experienced author and speaker in our fellowship of churches. He recently completed a tour through the Middle East and the Republic of Georgia, where he spoke about various Bible topics to churches in those regions.

The topic of Dr. Oakes’ class is Daniel: The Rise and Fall of Nations. This is the third class in our series on the Book of Daniel, and in it we will explore Daniel’s prophecies and the role of the book in the development of God’s plan of salvation.

Dr. Oakes will also teach our fourth and final class in the series on August 11, Daniel: The Message. Many writers have erroneously tried to apply the prophecies of Daniel to our contemporary era without regard for the historical context of the book and of Biblical prophecy in general. We will look into the issue of how to correctly apply the book’s message to our lives.

Classes meet on Sundays from 7:00-8:00 PM at 10 Goodyear, Irvine, CA 92618.

New Worship in Fullerton on Easter Sunday

New Beginnings

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news…to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Luke 4:18,19)

Announcing a new worship service in Fullerton on Easter Sunday at 10 AM!

Ladera VistaLadera Vista Junior High School
1700 E. Wilshire Avenue
Fullerton, CA 92831

Fresh Start, Clean Slate, Do-Over, No Worries, New Man, Turn Around, New Beginnings…These words describe the good news and the hope of change that Jesus brought into our world! Everywhere he went there were lives that were changed and touched both spiritually and physically. As a church we have the same vision to bring this good news to all of Orange County and to the world!

We are excited to begin a new church in Fullerton on Easter Sunday of 2013! What an appropriate day to start as we focus on the glory of the resurrected Jesus and the life and vision that he brought to the church that he established. God has arranged a large team of about 300 disciples for this mission northward – from the marrieds, EDGE, campus and teen ministries. He is calling us higher and sending us out with faith into his harvest field.

Over two years ago, we prayed and fasted that God would give us a dream and vision for Orange County. We believe he answered this prayer by showing us the physical and spiritual needs in the over 3 million people here in the OC. Our prayer and vision, as the leadership team of the Orange County Church of Christ, is to have at least 7 worship services throughout Orange County and a church of over 2,500 disciples by the year 2020! They will consist of 4 English speaking services and 3 services in our International Ministry – in Spanish, Korean & Vietnamese.

Please be praying for our new Fullerton worship Center and our future worship centers by the year 2020. Our current target areas are: Costa Mesa/Newport Beach, San Clemente, and Anaheim, as well in our International Ministry – Spanish, Korean and Vietnamese!

Special Note: Starting on March 31st at our services will begin at the new time of 10 a.m. also!

Children’s Play Next Sunday!

We are pleased to let you know that next Sunday, November 4th the Orange County Church of Christ Children’s Theater Club will be presenting a play! Here are the details.

“L.O.S.T. BUT NOW I’M FOUND!”

We’re Setting Sail, we’re flying high, we’re heading towards the sun….

Come along on this voyage with all the crew of the S.S. Hope as they set sail on a day cruise that gets caught up in a storm and becomes stranded on an island. Come see how the storms of life confront them to evaluate if their faith is built on the shifting sand or the Solid Rock, Jesus Christ.

Matthew 7:24-25, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock”… Jesus

John 6:35, Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

The Theater Club consists of boys and girls ranging in age from 5 – 13 years old who love to sing, act, and dance and ultimately give Glory to God. Our Club focuses on teaching theater skills and music while holding biblical devotions that coincide with what our focus for that day’s rehearsal is. We are grateful for the many hearts who devote their time and energy to serve these kids and expose them to the many ways they can use their gifts for God.

One Performance Only!!!

You can watch the play this Sunday, November 4th at 11 AM
10 Goodyear, Irvine CA 92618

Raising Hope

The Orange County Church of Christ is hosting our 2nd Annual Family Day and Carnival on September, 30, 2012 at 10 AM at our building on 10 Goodyear, Irvine. The theme this year is “Raising Hope”. Raising children in our world today can be a scary undertaking given the moral decay of our society. Just listening to the news each day can produce feelings of concern and fear as we think about what the future holds for our children. How can we have hope for a brighter future and hope that our families can shine like stars in this world? During the worship service, Mike and Libby Rock, our guest speakers, will answer this question by sharing God’s Word and their lives. Their story and message is not only for those who are married but also for teens, campus students and singles because every generation needs hope that they too can build an incredible family for future generations. Register for the carnival by clicking here: Orange County Family Carnival.

Mike & Libby Rock have been married 31 years and have raised two awesome boys – Jake, 25 who is married to Kelsey, and Scott, 21. The Rocks have undergone many spiritual tests that they have allowed to refine their characters, unite them as a family and bring them all closer to God. Mike and Libby have spent many years of their lives serving families in churches all over the world, so they are very aware and in tune to the needs and challenges of family life. They have served in the ministry all around the U.S. – including California, Colorado, Arizona and Florida and have been courageously involved with churches in the Middle East, and have helped to plant
