2014 Teen Camp

“Truth Be Told”

2014 Teen Camp

2014 Teen CampEach summer our Orange County Teen Ministry, along with other high school ministries from all over the Los Angeles area, travel to Big Bear for what we call “Teen Camp.” This year we took 43 students to camp from Orange County!

Some of the camps most exciting moments occurred during the intense competitions. All of our students were split up into 6 “Tribes,” and tribes competed throughout the week in various competitions: Dodgeball, Handball, Lip Sync, Glow-in-the-Dark Ultimate Frisbee, and more. There were points given out in each competition for sportsmanship, spirit and performance, and the Tribe of Zechariah took away the trophy with the most points this year!

Apart from these competitions, students also were able to attend workshops on various subjects ranging from Family Drama, Studying the Bible, Hot Topics, and Social Media. This year’s camp also included two specialized tracks for specific campers: a Drop Zone track for our incoming 9th Grade campers, and a Senior Leadership Track for all incoming Senior students.

The theme of this year’s camp was “Truth be Told.” The first lesson discussed “The Truth About God,” and how God is not only real but also a Father who would desperately search for us, His children. The second lesson was entitled “The Truth About Freedom,” which taught the students the realities of how sin traps and ensnares us and how “microscopic honesty” about our lives can lead to freedom. For the first time at camp, the students were split up by gender on Monday for more classes and lessons. The girls had an opportunity to learn about God as their perfect Father and what it means to truly be beautiful, while the men were taught about authentic manhood and the need for real brotherhood in their lives. Lastly we were taught about the need to take the truths that we had learned throughout the week down the mountain, and how God needs us to share those truths with the world around us.

Overall, our Teen Ministry has returned from camp fired up and ready to tell the truth for God as they transition back into their schools for the Fall Semester. We ask that you continue to pray for our Teen Ministry, and we thank all of those amazing staff and counselors who spent their week up at camp with our students!

“Fishers of Men”

Father & Son Campout 2014

We had an amazing weekend up at Silverwood Lake this year! I was left with the feeling that, “This is what our faith is all about!”…Having fun with our kids, enjoying fellowship, nature and of course the campfire! We had 51 dads and 76 boys join us this year. Steve Berger led an amazing devotional about fishing, and using the right spiritual bait, and persevering in our walks with God. Jesus came to turn parents’ hearts to their children and we got to witness God’s plan and heart for family this weekend. A big thanks to Kevin Mitchell and Aubyn Hines and the food crew, who made some amazing egg burritos, brisket, and a great spread! We look forward to this event continuing to grow in the years to come!

Raising Kids Godʼs Way!

Family05.2014Come join us this Sunday May 4th 10am-12:30pm for our Parenting Workshop. We will learn about how to meet the spiritual and emotional needs of our children, how to prioritize our lives in order to please God, and how to practice proactive vs reactive parenting.

We are excited to welcome our guest speakers Robert and Michelle Carrillo. Robert and Michelle have been serving in the full time ministry for many years and currently help lead the great San Diego Church of Christ. They have done a great job raising their children and we look forward to learning from their experiences.

2014 Catalyst Retreat

2014 Catalyst Retreat

Singles2014The 2014 Catalyst Singles retreat was an overwhelming success! Over 640 singles from the Greater Los Angeles area, Orange County, San Diego, Las Vegas, Arizona and many other churches came together in San Diego from March 7-9. The retreat’s theme “Catching Fire” focused on helping singles to catch a fire for God and catch a fire for the church.

The event started off on Friday night with a Hunger Games improv activity coordinated by the Turning Point ministry and ended with an inspiring message from our guest speakers, Elias and Rachel Deleault from Ashland, Oregon. Saturday started off with a morning quiet time, then men/women separate lessons, and then breakout classes taught by singles and some by ministry staff. There was a long fellowship break for lunch and dinner and activities in and around beautiful San Diego. Saturday night kicked off with a spirit-led worship night featuring many meaningful songs, spoken word performances, videos, and a testimony. The night was not complete without some speed-dating and a dance with DJ Joe Villasenor. The Sunday service was overflowing with retreat goers, more disciples from the San Diego church, and friends we had met along the way. Chairs were set up in the foyer because we exceeded the capacity of the facility!

“This was my first time attending and I can’t wait for next year. It was so inspiring, encouraging and spiritually uplifting!” – Catalyst Survey result

God definitely moved mountains to make this retreat a success (and for some…they are thankful we were not actually “in” the mountains this year!). Four weeks before the retreat, less than 100 people were signed up to attend. The committee prayed for God to move in the hearts of the singles and for the registration to exceed 300. By the time online registration ended, over 470 people had registered. And then another 170 people walked in and signed up on-site!

The Catalyst retreat started 6 years ago as an informal get-away for the Coastal and Orange County ministries in the LAICC. Over the last few years, other ministries were invited and eventually the retreat outgrew the original location. Who knows how we are going to top that for 2015? God always finds a way!
