Just Jesus

JustJesusOur theme for 2016 is “Just Jesus”. In our busy lives and even in the church it is easy to get caught up in the fast paced life that we live. In fact at times we can get so caught up in all we have to do and accomplish we can lose the whole reason we are here, who we are living for and how does He want to go about our lives. Hebrews 12:2 says, “Fix our eyes on Jesus the author and perfected of our faith.” This verse tells us that Jesus authored our faith. In other words, He created it. It also tells us that He lived it perfectly. Wow! That is an upward call. Because of these things, God wants us to fix our eyes on Jesus. There are so many different aspects of Jesus life that are important for us to examine. We could focus on His love, His power, the saving element of His blood, or His dependence on God. We could focus on His sinless life or His words of truth. The list is endless and each aspect of Jesus life and character that we examine will bring about tremendous growth in different areas of our own lives. In 2 Corinth 3:17-18 God teaches us whenever anyone turns to the Lord there is freedom from ourselves and our sin so that we can be transformed into His image with ever increasing glory. So as we begin 2016 with our attention fixed on Jesus we can be assured that we are in for an exciting journey of transformation. We will be transformed into Jesus’ image. 2016 will be filled with sermons about Christ. Our family group lessons during the week will take those sermons and make them very practical for our daily lives. We will have a three day fast together at the beginning of the year imitating Christ’s fast at the beginning of His ministry. We will have scripture memory as well as a Bible reading plan in the gospels so we are all on the same page spiritually. Each ministry will also be adding their own touches to the “Just Jesus” theme. I can’t wait to see what God will do as we examine, worship, imitate and honor Christ in 2016. Here is the link to the Reading Plan and Scripture Memory: Just Jesus Memory.

We Made It!

Made ItOn June 7th we collected a “Special Missions Contribution” to support our sister churches in Mexico and Central America. Our goal was $236,000. To date, the church has given $271,000.
What a great victory for our church and for the churches in Mexico and Central America! Thank you for allowing God to use you to help so many disciples and future disciple in our 39 churches south of the border. A portion of the money will be used to teach disciples and their children in our churches in Central America learn English in order to better their chances of supporting their families. Money will be used to begin or support existing campus ministries. Other funds will be used to develop leadership in these churches, other funds will be used to plant new churches and support newer mission teams. What a tremendous opportunity for us to partner with our Latin brothers and sisters to have a dramatic impact on many. I feel very proud of the disciples in Orange County and your generosity. Your hearts to respond to the needs locally and around the world are an inspiration to me and to many who have heard of what you have done not only in this contribution but also in many other expressions of your love for those in need.

Easter Service in Irvine

Alive

Easter 2014On April 20th we will be celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. A strong case can be made that this is the pinnacle event of all human history. The resurrection of Christ is the hope of all mankind. By Jesus resurrecting from the dead he conquered satan and all of his plans to render mankind doomed. The resurrection gives us victory in every aspect of our lives.

When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades. Revelation 1:17-18 (NIV84)

When Jesus rose from the dead he forever conquered death and the power of death in our lives ( Heb 2:14). To see the figure of a dead Jesus and three days later to see Him alive again by the plan and the power of God gives us hope for our own lives. Jesus’ death and resurrection was a fore runner of the victory that every disciple of Christ will share on judgment day. God proved that He was more powerful than satan and sin. Our victory is over the sin that had once conquered us. Each of us has experienced the emptiness and hopelessness of a life lived outside of Christ.

When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins – Colossians 2:13 (NIV84)

When we are baptized into Christ we are forgiven of our sins (Acts 2:36-41 , Acts 22:6-16) and at that moment satan lost his grip on us. At that moment we took full advantage of Jesus’ death , burial and resurrection and became one with Him in all of His victories. We have won the victory over sin, death, and our old selves to be the person God has always designed us to become (2 Corinth 5:17).

We will be having a regional devotional on April 11 and 5 worship services on April 20 entitled “ALIVE” to celebrate the victories we share as disciples of Christ. Please join us.

Reflecting Back and Looking Ahead

Reflecting Back and Looking Ahead

God at WorkAs we finish 2013 and look forward towards 2014, it is a great time to reflect and to dream. As we look back over 2013, what were your greatest victories in your spiritual character? How did you see God work in your life and in your family’s life? (John 5:17, Romans 8:28, Acts 17:24-27) The Bible tells us that God is always working and that He is working for our good. The Bible also tells us that God orchestrates the coming and going of people and situations in our lives to help us seek Him and find Him. Since all of this is true, it is important for us to reflect and to be able to see God’s hand working in our lives. As we do this, our faith will grow and our appreciation for God will grow. Even as we reflect on the difficult times we will be able to see how God was molding us and rescuing us. What lessons has God taught you this past year? How have you seen God work in each of your family member’s lives? What opportunities has God opened up for you? How has God blessed you?

“Many, O Lord my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare.” Psalms 40:5

This is a wonderful Psalm of David. On one hand, David is looking back and recounting all of the wonderful things that God has done in his life in the past. As David does this, it produces in him a faithful attitude about what God will do for him in the future. As you think of all the ways that God has been with you and blessed you in 2013, it will give you great faith and anticipation as you look towards 2014. David is so full of faith about the future that he says if God would have the opportunity to sit down and tell you all that He has planned for you, you couldn’t handle it, it would be just too much. Wow, what a wonderful way to think and to feel about your past and your future.

Some of us may feel that we had a hard year in 2013 and it may be difficult to find God’s handiwork in our lives. One of the greatest examples of a faithful attitude in the Bible is the apostle Paul. As Paul writes the letter to the Philippians he is in a dark prison not knowing how long it will be before he is executed. However, as you read his letter, he is so faithful and grateful about all that God has done and all that God is doing and will do. Twice he is encouraging the Philippians to rejoice in the Lord ( Phil 3:1, Phil 4:4). How was Paul able to have such a faithful spirit when his situation was so dark and hopeless? Paul knew that God was good, that God was working and that God would take him to heaven. Because of these things he trained himself to focus on God and all He was doing and not on the situational problems he was facing. (Phil 1:6, Phil1:21, Phil 4:8)

We see Paul’s faithful attitude about the future when He says,

“Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:12-14

Encouraging next steps

  • Make a List of all the ways you have seen God bless you in 2013
  • Make a list of all that you are spiritually looking forward to in 2014

Sharing our Faith Together
Jesus commands us to go and make disciples in Matt 28:18-20. Often we need help to have the courage to share the good news of Christ with this world that so desperately needs Him. To this end we are planning four different times during the week of July 21-28 for the disciples in our church to come together and share our faith with the people of Orange County.

We are having a regional “Summer Fest” Service at 10:00a.m. on Sunday, July 29th that will include a picnic and sports day at Mason Park site #6 immediately afterwards . Invitations to the “Summer Fest” service and picnic will be available this Sunday July 15th at church.

Several of the ministry staff will be organizing the different evangelistic sessions . Below is the schedule of when we will be going and who will be organizing. Please email the staff member of the appropriate session that you can attend to get more detailed information.

Special Missions Contribution

Almost There

On June 10th we took up our Special Missions Contribution for the churches in Mexico and Central America and the church planting in Tucson, Arizona. We needed to collect $329,500.00 in order to meet all of the needs; $275,000 for the churches in Mexico and Central America, $18,000 for the Tucson, Arizona church planting and $36,500 for our weekly contribution. As of Sunday June 17th we have collected $292,500. I would like to thank everyone who sacrificed so much for our brothers and sisters in Latin America and for those that will become disciples through your generous sacrifice. We are close to meeting our goal and the needs. The Elders and I have set aside Sunday, July 15th as a day when we will give anything above our weekly contribution towards completing our Special Missions Contribution. I feel it is important for us to meet these needs. The difference between our current contribution of $292,500 and our $329,500 goal would be the salary of one ministry couple for a year. This is critical when in some cities they have one ministry couple for 400 disciples. Thanks again for all of the faith and love that so many of you have shown not just this year, but year after year, as we hold out the word of life to people all over the world.
