Fasting and Praying 2016

2016FandP2As has been shared a few times over the last few weeks, we will be fasting as a congregation beginning on Thursday, January 21st after dinner and concluding with lunch on Sunday, January 24th.

This fast is part of our theme for the year – “Just Jesus”. We read in Matthew 4 that when Jesus began His ministry He started it with a 40-day fast. Jesus wanted to be completely focused on God’s will and free from His own. He used this time to pray and focus on God and what He would be doing for God in His ministry. As we begin our year we want to call upon God to cleanse us, purify our hearts, focus us and empower us so that we can become exactly who He has designed us to be as well as accomplish all that He has in store for us. We are very excited to go on this spiritual journey together and can’t wait to see what God will do as we cry out to Him. Below are some ideas of what you can pray for as we fast together as well as passages to read about fasting.

Just Jesus

Just Jesus

JustJesusOur theme for 2016 is “Just Jesus”. In our busy lives and even in the church it is easy to get caught up in the fast paced life that we live. In fact at times we can get so caught up in all we have to do and accomplish we can lose the whole reason we are here, who we are living for and how does He want to go about our lives. Hebrews 12:2 says, “Fix our eyes on Jesus the author and perfected of our faith.” This verse tells us that Jesus authored our faith. In other words, He created it. It also tells us that He lived it perfectly. Wow! That is an upward call. Because of these things, God wants us to fix our eyes on Jesus. There are so many different aspects of Jesus life that are important for us to examine. We could focus on His love, His power, the saving element of His blood, or His dependence on God. We could focus on His sinless life or His words of truth. The list is endless and each aspect of Jesus life and character that we examine will bring about tremendous growth in different areas of our own lives. In 2 Corinth 3:17-18 God teaches us whenever anyone turns to the Lord there is freedom from ourselves and our sin so that we can be transformed into His image with ever increasing glory. So as we begin 2016 with our attention fixed on Jesus we can be assured that we are in for an exciting journey of transformation. We will be transformed into Jesus’ image. 2016 will be filled with sermons about Christ. Our family group lessons during the week will take those sermons and make them very practical for our daily lives. We will have a three day fast together at the beginning of the year imitating Christ’s fast at the beginning of His ministry. We will have scripture memory as well as a Bible reading plan in the gospels so we are all on the same page spiritually. Each ministry will also be adding their own touches to the “Just Jesus” theme. I can’t wait to see what God will do as we examine, worship, imitate and honor Christ in 2016. Here is the link to the Reading Plan and Scripture Memory: Just Jesus Memory.

We Made It!

Made ItOn June 7th we collected a “Special Missions Contribution” to support our sister churches in Mexico and Central America. Our goal was $236,000. To date, the church has given $271,000.
What a great victory for our church and for the churches in Mexico and Central America! Thank you for allowing God to use you to help so many disciples and future disciple in our 39 churches south of the border. A portion of the money will be used to teach disciples and their children in our churches in Central America learn English in order to better their chances of supporting their families. Money will be used to begin or support existing campus ministries. Other funds will be used to develop leadership in these churches, other funds will be used to plant new churches and support newer mission teams. What a tremendous opportunity for us to partner with our Latin brothers and sisters to have a dramatic impact on many. I feel very proud of the disciples in Orange County and your generosity. Your hearts to respond to the needs locally and around the world are an inspiration to me and to many who have heard of what you have done not only in this contribution but also in many other expressions of your love for those in need.

Godly Father

The Godly Father

Godly FatherThe role of the father in a family is critical. God has designed the family to be led by the father. The father provides the children with a loving authority figure who cares for ,provides and protects them. According to the U.S. Census bureau one out of three children in the U.S. live in homes where the biological father is absent. This has left many children without the proper care or role model that God intended. God has a lot to say about how he wants fathers to care for, train and love their children in His word, the Bible. We are starting an 8 week interactive class helping fathers love and lead their families God’s way. It will begin on July 12 and will run for 8 consecutive weeks. It will be held at 10 Goodyear, Irvine, Ca, 92618. The session will begin at 8:00a.m. and end promptly at 9:00a.m. Please join me as we learn and grow together in this vital role by listening to God and helping one another.

2015 Special Contribution

2015 MissionsOur 2015 Special Missions Contribution will be June 7th. This is an exciting time for our church as we participate in supporting our brothers and sisters in Mexico and Central America in their efforts to make disciples! Jesus’ heart is to see as many people as possible saved throughout the world. As a family of churches we have planted over 500 churches all over the world. Thousands of people are getting baptized each year in these churches. This is to fulfill Jesus’ command with Jesus’ heart.

He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned…….19 After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. 20 Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it. (Mark 16:15-20)

The church in Orange County specifically has taken on the responsibility and the joy of supporting the churches in Mexico and Central America. In 1987 the church in Mexico City was planted with just 13 disciples of Christ. Now, 28 years later, from that single church planting there are 39 churches throughout Mexico and Central America with a membership of close to 10,000.

Each year we take up a collection to help support the work of these 39 churches. 85% of this money goes towards planting new churches, developing and supporting campus ministries in these churches, as well as leadership development. The rest is divided up among administration, fund raising, and program development. We have been support-ing this great work for over twenty years.

This year we have added a new program, the ESL program. The ESL (English as a Second Language) program started about two years ago. This program is in three countries: Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. The goal of this program is to be able to teach disciples and their children in our churches English. This will increase their in-come so that they can have a better standard of living, reach the opinion leaders of their communities, and eventually help the churches become self-supporting. There are currently 283 students enrolled in this program. There are 9 teachers, one of which is our very own Ana Cuevas. Once a disciple learns English, their earning potential will double, triple or even quadruple. Walter Kokowski, the director of this program, is scheduled to come to Orange County and speak to the our church May 17 about this great work.

Our goal this year, when you include our weekly contribution, is $236,000.00. Please be making plans to give generously to this great work. Remember that in 1988 the church in Boston took up a Special Missions Contribution that helped plant the church in Los Angeles in 1989. Because of the Los Angeles church planting many of us were able to hear the gospel and become baptized disciples of Jesus. Now it is our turn to return the favor to our future brothers and sisters in Latin America.
